 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Dear Colleague:                                                                  June 18th 2009

It was truly a pleasure to see many of you at our gathering in Chicago during the 2008 RSNA.  Thank you very much for your confidence and endorsing my nomination as the president of NAIRS.

Since our last meeting, there have been few events and several issues that I like to share with you:

1.      Our web site (www.nairsociety.com) has undergone some changes. It now contains the bylaws, the names of the officers (executive council, members at large and Secretary treasure) and the updated one page application for membership (posted below and under the page “about Society”). Many pictures from our gathering may also be found. Thanks to Dr Afshang for his help. I would like to invite you to visit the web site.

2.      By visiting the website, it is now very easy to apply for membership. Those of you who are not a current member or know of someone who is not a member are encouraged to print the one page application and send in to Dr Raofi, our new secretary/treasurer. Please familiarize your Iranian colleagues and residents with the website and recommend to them to apply for membership.

3.      At the end of April 2009, I had the pleasure to participate at the Iranian Congress of Radiology (www.icr2009.ir) and witnessed one of the best ones that I have ever attended. The meeting was held at the Olympic Hotel in Tehran, had 16 international speakers including 4 of our society members and brought in over 2000 registrants. The current and former presidents of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) were among the guests. I feel the meeting was an opportunity to open the door for future educational ties between the Iranian and European Radiology Societies.  In this regard, two things which have so far taken place are:

A)  There are efforts underway to establish an Iranian School of Radiology like ESOR.  Dr. Nicholas Gourtsoyiannis, who is currently the professor and chairman of radiology at the University of Crete in Greece, is leading this effort.

B)   Dr. Christian Herold, who is the current president of ESR, has extended an invitation to the Iranian Society of Radiology (ISR) to participate as the esteemed host president guest country in Vienna for 2011 meeting. This will be an opportunity for the ISR to present the work of their members to the European Radiological community.  The 90 minutes session is to focus on one main topic presented by three of rising and confirmed stars in radiology in Iran.

4.    A plan is under consideration to hold the International Society of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ISMRI) annual congress in Tehran during 2010.  This is to be a separate meeting from the regularly scheduled ICR 2010. When this takes place, it will be a very important achievement for our sister society in Iran. Many thanks to Dr Mostafa Atri from Toronto who has initiated the recommendation and is in the process of discussing this with the ISR officials.

5.      During ICR in Tehran, I had a meeting with Drs’ Karim Vessal and Mansoor Fatehi and the subject of potential additional collaborations between the NAIRS and ISR was extensively discussed.  They were appreciative for the initiative that we have taken in the past to sponsor our sister society in Iran and are very receptive to the ideas that we discussed during our RSNA meeting.  In particular, they like the idea of initiation and development of the research projects between the trainees in those academic institutions which some of the NAIRS members are faculties.  Also they would like to further explore the possibility of sponsorship by our society of a young Iranian radiologist particularly those who are in training program to come here for a short term observership.

6.      Dr Karim Vessal, the founder of Iranian Journal of Radiology (IJR) appreciates and welcomes receiving manuscript from you and your residents for publication.  Their address is;
